US police investigating after 'white powdery substance sent to Barack Obama's office'

US police are investigating after a “white powdery substance” was sent to a Washington building housing an office leased by Barack Obama, according to reports.

DC Police told the Standard the incident was reported shortly after midday on Tuesday.

The former president has leased office space at the building, the headquarters of the World Wildlife Fund, since January 2017.

The incident comes just days after incumbent president Donald Trump‘s daughter-in-law was taken to hospital after a letter containing a “suspicious substance” was sent to her New York apartment.

Vanessa Trump, husband to the president’s eldest son Donald Jr, underwent a check-up as a precaution.

British counter-terror officers were also deployed to the Houses of Parliament on Tuesday morning after a package of white powder was sent to home secretary Amber Rudd

Both packages were investigated by police on either side of the Atlantic, who found them to be harmless in both cases.
